Suggestions from a Life Coach on Passing Time During COVID-19

Alexandra Birenbaum, MA, CAP, CSAT, and Life Coach shares ideas on making the most of the home lockdown during this Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

During this horrendous time of COVID-19 and the forced almost quarantine, many people are struggling with finding activities to occupy themselves. In addition, there is fear over the economy, stress over the illness/co-occurring medical conditions, too much free time, personal conflicts, etc.

Often people find themselves needing additional support as we are unable to spend time with our friends and go about our normal lives. Many people have lost their jobs and are “stuck.” This type of event can affect one’s general mental health condition in countless ways, and if an illness like depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder already exists then it can greatly exacerbate it.

Life coaching services can help hold people accountable during this tumultuous time. Life coaches are people who you not only see on a weekly basis, sometimes more, but also are available throughout the week when you are struggling.

Coaches (including recovery coaches) are there via phone, text, email and video chat. Ultimately, your success during this time depends on how you choose to structure your life. Instead of thinking of it as a time spent in front on the television, think of creative ways to occupy your time.

Below is a list of suggestions to occupy yourself during your free time:
• find a hobby you enjoy
• get creative
• puzzles, games, cards
• go for walks and/bike rides
• take advantage of technology such as zoom, facetime, and skype to stay connected to your friends and loved ones
• clean out your closets
• go through your “to do list” that has been sitting on the counter indefinitely
• read a book
• learn something new (language, skill, etc.)
• take an online class
• spend time with the few people you can be around

The Coronavirus is a potentially fatal epidemic that has impacted the whole world. As a life & recovery coach, I would strongly suggest limiting how much time you spend watching the news as it can often increase feelings of stress and anxiety. Professionals know that simply watching the news for 15 minutes once or twice a day is sufficient for you to have the knowledge you need to protect yourself and your families.

When a moment of pessimist, frustration, sadness or anger comes around, stop….take 1 or 2 deep breaths, then try reframing that moment into a positive situation.

You can do this, I promise!
